After the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on 22 April, Debashree Mukherjee, Secretary, Ministry of Water Power of India, wrote a letter to Syed Ali Murtaza, Secretary, Pakistan’s Ministry of Water. The letter clearly states that India remains a victim of cross -border terrorism from Pakistan. Pakistan’s letter
The first letter was sent before the operation vermilion begins in early May. Since then Murtaza has sent three additional appeals. According to sources, all correspondence has been sent to the Ministry of External Affairs through the Ministry of Water Power. After the Pahalgam attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated that business and terror, water and blood, bullets and conversations cannot run together.
How did India help India from Indus Water Treaty suspension
India has accelerated work on strategic water infrastructure projects related to the Indus river system. A major initiative is a 130 km long canal designed to connect the Beas River to the Ganges Canal, which is the proposed expansion to the Yamuna River. The project, about 200 km long, includes a 12 -km long tunnel, allowing Yamuna water to reach Gangasagar. States like Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan are expected to benefit from this initiative. The government has said that the work is moving fast and is expected to be completed in two to three years. A detailed project report (DPR) is also being prepared.

What does it mean for Pakistan
Sources suggest that the suspension of the treaty can greatly affect Pakistan’s rabi crops, while the kharif season will be expected. In addition to agriculture, disruption can affect daily life, causing potentially water availability crisis. Pakistan has allegedly contacted the World Bank for mediation. However, the World Bank has so far refused to intervene in India’s internal decision to suspend its participation in the treaty. India has emphasized the need to reconsider the treaty and re -interaction to reflect the realities of the 21st century. The original treaty prepared in the 1950s and 1960s is considered to be rapidly older due to hydrological patterns, melting of glaciers, population growth and changes in durable energy and water management.
